10 Things to Add to Your Wardrobe for Spring 2020

Time to say goodbye to bulky sweaters and tall boots and say hello to spring! The days of throwing on breezy dresses and not worrying about heavy layers is here and I’m ready for it. As you look at your closet, you may decide you’re in need of a few updates to make your wardrobe more current. So what do you need to know? I’m here to give you a list of 10 trends for the spring/summer of 2020 that are fun, fresh, and runway-approved.

1. Mini Handbags

Don’t get me wrong, I love a big tote bag that carries my life on busy days! But for the lunch date, trip to the mall, or dinner with friends, consider carrying a mini handbag. They are so fun and unique and can help add the perfect trendy touch to an outfit.

2. Metallic Sandals

When you see metallic, you probably think holiday or special event… but nope! Consider metallics a neutral this season. Yes, even for your casual days! The easiest way to incorporate metallics into your wardrobe is through shoes. A silver or gold sandal pairs with almost anything, and who doesn’t love a little shine?

3. Graphic T-Shirts

If you didn’t save your favorite band’s concert tee from the 70’s or 80’s and currently regret it, you’re not the only one! Whether it’s a band, cute motif, or relatable quote, graphic tees are becoming a wardrobe staple for 2020. Pair with jeans and a blazer or with a skirt and sneakers. Have fun shopping for one that reflects your personality or interests!

4. Long Blazers

If you know me, you know I can’t live without a good blazer. This spring, you will begin to see blazers longer in length paired with jeans, work trousers, and even shorts. Blazers work great when you need to bring a light layer to dinner or running errands and keep you looking put-together at the same time. Style tip for wearing longer blazers: belt them around the waist for a more structured, trendy look.

5. White Shoes

Heels, sandals, mules, or sneakers… you won’t regret getting a white pair! Having on a white shoe helps brighten up an outfit, whether it is dressy or casual. A quality pair of white sneakers will be a go-to year-round, and for spring they are popularly featured with casual mini or midi skirts/dresses or denim. As for a white sandal, you will find yourself continuously reaching for these as the weather gets warm, of course because they match everything!

6. Sheer Details

Talk about runway-approved! This trend is one that caught my eye many times during New York Fashion Week. For my bold fashion statement makers out there, try a dramatic sheer sleeve or play with layering under sheer tops. This trend isn’t only for the daring trend-seekers though! For my more conservative friends, look for simple sheer details, such as a sheer layering over a dress or a more subtle sheer sleeve. I love how the freedom of fashion allows us to take something bold from the runway and mold it in different ways to incorporate it into our everyday wardrobe.

7. Belts

Currently my favorite accessory. Big belts are everywhere and everything this year. Belts aren’t only meant for jeans. Wear them around dresses or layer over blazers, jackets, and cardigans. This is the perfect way to mix prints or add a pop of color to an outfit too.

8. Day-to-Night Sequins

Who says sequins are only meant for parties? This spring, sequins are shining in the sunlight too! On the runway we are seeing full sequin dresses paired with a sandal or sneaker and worn under a casual layer such as a denim jacket. How fun right?! If you don’t feel comfortable sporting that amount of sparkle in the daytime, tone it down by wearing small sequin details found in a headband, t-shirt, or shoe.

9. Puff Sleeves

A trend I’m all about! A fun sleeve turns a simple shirt into a fashion statement. And no, it doesn’t have to be 1980’s shoulder pad kind of puff sleeve! You will see this detail on dresses, tops, and jackets in different shapes and sizes. Here are some options I would easily add to my wardrobe.

10. Polka Dots

A print that always comes back around! Just like leopard or stripes, the popularity of polka dots comes in waves but never fully goes away. If you’re a fan of girly chic, you’ll love this print on jumpsuits, skirts, dresses, swim suits, and accessories.

Now that you have the basics of what you’ll be seeing in spring of 2020, it’s time to shop right?! You may not even need to buy it all new because you might have some of these trends hanging in your closet now. Staying up to date with seasonal trends doesn’t mean you have to get a completely new wardrobe, it’s just about being intentional with how you wear what you have and adding a few new pieces to create some updated looks. Hopefully this inspires you to go shopping in your closet with fresh eyes, or feel free to indulge in a spring shopping spree!
