How To Style A Trench Coat

Hey Stello friends and followers, it’s Aubrey, Riane’s junior stylist! I’m making an appearance on the blog today to help you out with a little style tip for the winter season. There’s one piece of outerwear that I just added to my own wardrobe for the first time that I am falling in love with every time I wear it… and that is my trench coat!

I don’t know if you were ever like me in thinking, “If I wear a trench coat, I’ll look like a creepy undercover detective” or “I thought you were only supposed to wear trench coats when you’re dressing up?” Well yes, if you wear a black trench with a fedora and sunglasses, it is likely that you will look like a creepy undercover detective. However, you can style it to look feminine, chic, and on trend, whether you are dressing up or down.

The style inspiration is endless! Wear it tied at the waist with a contrasting belt or leave it open to show off your cute outfit underneath. Dress it down for a street style with jeans and a t-shirt, then throw on some sneakers or booties to complete the look. Dress it up over a dress and heels for a date night or event.

When thinking about purchasing this wardrobe staple, it’s good to keep in mind the length and color. If you are shorter in height, maybe a shorter length coat works best for you! When talking color, I think it’s best to stick to your neutrals, such as black, gray, ivory, tan/camel, allowing you to pair it with just about anything! If you want to get a bit sassy, an animal print would be a fun addition too!

Hopefully now your perception of the trench coat has changed and you’re ready to make a new addition to your wardrobe! The best part about it is that you don’t have to make it a huge investment. Both Riane and I made our coat purchases from H&M! I’ve linked both high and low price points for you to shop, whether you’re looking for a quality piece to keep for a long time, or an affordable option that allows you to just test out the look! Either way, this classic piece isn’t going anywhere and you will have so much fun with it. Plus, it’s the perfect lightweight layer as we transition from winter to spring. Check out this fresh trench coat inspiration from both Riane and myself… shop away!
