The Scarf…How do I wear this thing?
Honestly who doesn't buy a scarf thinking, “Ok, I can wear this!”? It's a trend, it doesn't have to cost a fortune, and it should be relatively easy to wear. Am I right? So we take home the new scarf feeling somewhat successful in the retail therapy department, only to pull it out the next day and the excitement turns into disappointed confusion on what to do with it. We fluff it, move it around a lot, trying to get it to look just like it did on the girl in the store who tied it on you so fast that it looked like it would be a cinch... So what are you doing wrong?
There are a couple of common themes dealing with scarves that I have noticed over the years.
1. We are over-thinking the look.
I tell my clients and friends all the time that so much of fashion and style is simply the attitude that you approach it with. People notice when you feel good in something and the compliments start flowing. Scarves need to put you at ease, add a pop of color to an outfit and keep you warm if you are cold natured like I am! I usually tie my scarf one of two ways because that is what I am comfortable with.
1 - I love to do the basic pull through and pull it off of my neck so it lays on my chest.
2 - I will wear it up close like an infinity scarf on colder days, keeping my neck warm. You just wrap it 2x's followed by the simple pull through.
The point is I wear it the way I feel comfortable.
2.We purchase a scarf that is too heavy.
"But it looked good on the mannequin?!" Well, the mannequin isn't moving, picking up children, and doesn't have hormones and hot flashes either. I don't buy scarves that are made of heavy material for a couple reasons. They add bulk to my torso, take up too much room and have gone from being a compliment with my outfit to a distraction. When that happens, you get flushed and frustrated with your super cute $25 purchase that you'll probably never wear again. Think viscose! It's a great scarf fabric.
The Scarf is a trend that is easy to conquer if you will buy lighter weight fabrics in colors that you feel good in. Don't over think how to wear it. Wrap it twice or tie it in a simple pull through knot. I also limit myself to just a few scarves per season to insure that I will wear it and get my moneys worth out of it. Too many choices can be overwhelming, just because something is relatively inexpensive doesn't mean you should go crazy. Less is more, trust me.
These are a few of my favorite looks that I wear out and about. Have fun wearing your scarves this winter! I’d love for you to share pics with me in your favorite looks! Post them on our Facebook page Stello Style or tag us in them @stello_style on your instagram.
Now remember, "Wear what you love...and you will love what you wear!"
