The Struggle is real...Conquering the emotions of getting dressed
I was having a great conversation a few days ago day with a client/friend just catching up and filling each other in on life. She commented on the blog and brought it to my attention that getting dressed is really hard somedays. I began to talk with her about why I think we allow getting dressed to be such a stressful and overwhelming process. So, I am here to help talk you off of the fashion ledge so to speak!
1. We are creatures of habit- You may not like to admit it but there is a reason you wear the same thing over and over again in your closet, and it is not just because you may love it. Most of the time you are in a hurry and grabbing the old faithful because it is just that, dependable. I’m not talking dependable as in amazing and fits perfect, I’m talking dependable in the sense of black yoga pants. They take little thought, they are stretchy enough no matter what you ate the night before and they take zero brain power. Those all sound like great reasons but the problem is it becomes simply repetitive and you're loosing the ability to take the extra five minutes for yourself to actually feel good about what you have on. I always suggest laying out your clothes the night before, knowing you will love what you have on, instead of feeling stressed out.
2. We are visual - if the closet is a hot mess then the whole process of getting dressed can be an emotional nightmare. Have you ever had the thoughts; “I have nothing to wear”, “I don’t even know what fits anymore”, “I am bored with everything in here”. These are comments I hear everyday on the job, and what I encourage/demand of all my new clients is to start with purging the closet from all the unnecessary distractions and unneeded items. Please refer back to my blog 'Closet Purge' for all the yummy details.
3. We over think the process - maybe you have tons of great pieces in the wardrobe, and choosing what to wear drives you to the point of giving up all together. Please don’t give up! Find a starting place and build the outfit from there. Here are a few pointers that help me.
-where am I going today?
Then start with shoes that are the best choice based on your plans. "Am I doing lots of walking?" (flats please!), "Will I be sitting?" (heels!!)
-next what is the weather going to be like?
-finally what do I want my outfit choice to say?
Getting dressed is another way to express yourself. Enjoy it and have fun with it!
Now, we all are in a different phase of our lives as women. Some of us work full time at an office, some of us are students, many are stay at home moms, and some may work from home. It is normal to need to dress a certain way for theses phases of life that you are in and embrace that to the max. The area that this blog will apply for are those extra surprises in life when getting dressed matters more. Weddings, baby showers, church, date nights, a forgotten work dinner with the hubs, a random girls night out, the list goes on! But take heart and take a breath! Give yourself time and possibly a glass of wine…

keep loving what you wear
